Scouting for Food "House Monster" Skits

Materials: Fake food, Scouting for Food bags (10), cardboard house, two pieces of string

This silly, two-part skit is appropriate for Webelos to present to the younger Cub Scouts to help introduce the Scouting for Food drive.

The Webelos den leader or another adult sits in the house and plays the role of the "house monster." Wear a mask for good effect. You can decorate the house to make it look "haunted." The haunted house may play into a Halloween theme for the pack meeting.

Cut a door into the front of the cardboard house. Glue a strip of cardboard to the door to serve as a handle. Cut an opening in the door, so that the house monster can peer out while the "actors" aren't looking.

Skit #1: Delivering the Bags

[CUBMASTER WILL INTRODUCE THE WEBELOS.]
[SCOUTS WALK UP NEAR HOUSE. STAY TO THE SIDE, SO THE AUDIENCE CAN SEE THE DOOR.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Let me show you how to give out the bags for Scouting for Food. We have to tie one bag on each door. Let me show you how it's done."
[WEBELOS SCOUT WALKS UP TO DOOR AND TIES BAG TO THE DOOR HANDLE. HE TURNS AROUND AND FACES THE OTHER SCOUTS.]
Webelos Scout: "See? It's easy. That bag will stay put."
[HOUSE MONSTER CRACKS OPEN THE DOOR, REACHES OUT, PULLS THE BAG INTO THE HOUSE, AND SHUTS THE DOOR. THE OTHER SCOUTS DON'T ACT LIKE THEY SEE ANYTHING. THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT WAITS A FEW SECONDS AND THEN TURNS AROUND TO LOOK AT THE DOOR.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Hey!!! Where did the bag go?"
Scout #2: "I don't know. Maybe the wind blew it away."
Lead Webelos Scout: "Okay, let me try that again."
[THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT GRABS ANOTHER SCOUT'S BAG AND TIES IT TO THE DOOR HANDLE. HE TURNS AROUND AND FACES THE OTHER SCOUTS AGAIN.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "That should do it? Are there any questions?"
[HOUSE MONSTER YANKS BAG INTO THE HOUSE AGAIN. THE OTHER SCOUTS DON'T ACT LIKE THEY SEE HIM DO IT.]
Scout #3: "Yeah. I have a question. What happened to your bag?"
Lead Webelos Scout: "What do you mean? It's right there!"
[THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT TURNS AROUND TO LOOK AT THE DOOR.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Hey!!! Where did the bag go? All right, this time I'm really going to fix it. Please give me another bag."
[WEBELOS SCOUT GRABS ANOTHER SCOUT'S BAG AND TIES IT TO THE DOOR HANDLE. THIS TIME, HE PULLS OUT A PIECE OF STRING AND LOOSELY TIES IT AROUND THE BAG AND DOOR HANDLE. HE TURNS AROUND AND FACES THE OTHER SCOUTS AGAIN. HE WIPES HIS HANDS TOGETHER.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "That should do it. Let's go to the next house."
[THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT STAYS STILL WHILE TALKING. THE HOUSE MONSTER CRACKS OPEN THE DOOR, REACHES OUT AND LOOSELY TIES A PIECE OF STRING AROUND THE WEBELOS SCOUT'S ANKLES.]
[THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT TRIES TO WALK, BUT CAN'T.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "What's going on here? I'm getting sick of this place."
[FACING AUDIENCE, THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT BENDS OVER TO UNTIE HIS ANKLES. AFTER HE LOOSENS THE STRING, BUT BEFORE STANDING UP, HOUSE MONSTER'S HAND COMES OUT OF THE DOOR TO GIVE HIM A PUSH IN THE REAR.
All Scouts: "Ahhh! Let's get out of here!!!"
[RUN SCREAMING OFF THE SET BACK TO THEIR SEATS.]

Skit #2: Collecting the Bags

[CUBMASTER WILL INTRODUCE THE WEBELOS.]
[SCOUTS WALK UP NEAR THE HOUSE. STAY TO THE SIDE, SO THE AUDIENCE CAN SEE THE DOOR.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Let me show you how to collect the Scouting for Food bags."
[THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT WALKS UP TO DOOR, PICKS UP BAG, AND RETURNS TO THE OTHER BOYS.]
[AS HE WALKS AWAY, THE HOUSE MONSTER'S PEERS OUT THE OPENING.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Let's see what they left us."
[THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT PULLS A PIECE OF CAULIFLOWER OR OTHER UNPOPULAR VEGETABLE.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Yuck! Nobody likes cauliflower. Let's tell this person what kind of food people can really use for their holiday dinners."
[THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT WALKS UP TO DOOR AND KNOCKS.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Hello. Is anyone home?"
House Monster: "Grunt. Grunt."
Lead Webelos Scout: "Excuse me, I want to thank you for the cauliflower, and I also want to ask you if you have any good food that people actually like to eat.
House Monster: "Grunt. Grunt."
Lead Webelos Scout: "We can use some canned vegetables."
[HOUSE MONSTER THROWS CAN OUT OVER THE TOP AT THE SCOUTS. THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT IS TALKING TO THE DOOR AND DOESN'T SEE THE FOOD FLYING OVER HIS HEAD. THE OTHER SCOUTS DUCK FOR COVER, DIVE FOR THE FLOOR, AND THEN GET UP.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "We can use some soup."
[HOUSE MONSTER THROWS SOUP OUT OVER THE TOP AT THE SCOUTS. THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT IS TALKING TO THE DOOR AND DOESN'T SEE FOOD FLYING OVER HIS HEAD. THE OTHER SCOUTS DUCK FOR COVER, DIVE FOR THE FLOOR, AND THEN GET UP.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "We can use some drinks."
[HOUSE MONSTER THROWS DRINK BOXES OUT OVER THE TOP AT THE SCOUTS. THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT IS TALKING TO THE DOOR AND DOESN'T SEE FOOD FLYING OVER HIS HEAD. THE OTHER SCOUTS DUCK FOR COVER, DIVE FOR THE FLOOR, AND THEN GET UP.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "We can use some bread."
[HOUSE MONSTER THROWS BREAD OUT OUT OVER THE TOP AT THE SCOUTS. THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT IS TALKING TO THE DOOR AND DOESN'T SEE FOOD FLYING OVER HIS HEAD. THE OTHER SCOUTS DUCK FOR COVER, DIVE FOR THE FLOOR, AND STAY DOWN.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Well, if you're not going to give any food for others who need help, I guess we'll go."
House Monster: "Grunt. Grunt."
Lead Webelos Scout: "Good bye."
[THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT TURNS AND LOOKS AT THE OTHER SCOUTS.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Hey what's your problem. Quit fooling around and clean up this mess. I'm trying to teach you about Scouting for Food and you aren't paying attention."
[HOUSE MONSTER THROWS LAST PIECE OF FOOD AT THE LEAD WEBELOS SCOUT'S BACK.]
Lead Webelos Scout: "Hey! What's going on???"
[THE HOUSE MONSTER'S FACE APPEARS SUDDENLY AGAIN IN THE OPENING.]
[ALL SCOUTS LOOK AT THE DOOR, AND RUN SCREAMING OFF THE SET BACK TO THEIR SEATS.]
